The Steelworks development information
After the full closure of Ebbw Vale Steelworks in 2002, the decision was made after a major public consultation, to divide the site up for a number of uses:
The Hospital

The Plan for the new hospital, which will be called Ysbyty Aneurin Bevan, will be built on the 'West gate' area of the site. The hospital will be built and in use by 2010 at the cost of £34 million. The new hospital will be managed by Gwent NHS trust and will be one of the first hospitals to have no wards, all rooms will be independent with en-suite facilities.
Housing Areas
The site will comprise of a number of housing estates, an estate which has recently been built by Redrow is Cae Fwrnais, near the site of the former RTB's club, the site will be finished in the next few months. On the actual site, Redrow have been given the contract to the first estate, called WestGate One.
Wetlands
Much of the site will be turned over to wetlands and park areas, to allow nature to 'reclaim' the once industrial land. These areas will be spread around the entire site, especially in the south of the site.
Retail areas
Part of the sites overall plan is to give Ebbw Vale a new retail centre, with shops, bars and restaurants in the centre of the site, accessed by the new main road which will cut through the middle of the site, give access to all parts of the site.
Railway Station
The Railway link to Cardiff will gain a new terminus in the site, near the General offices, it is also hoped that by this time we will have trains every half and hour traveling to Cardiff and Newport.
Development of General Offices
The historical General Offices at the top of the site are currently undergoing a major refurbishment, they will be turned into a museum to the history of Ebbw Vale's great industry. The development is expected to be completed by spring next year.
